MSC History Part IV – Start of 2 year courses at A. Flores St.

In 1991, MSC got the necessary permit to offer two-year courses in Office Management (OMC) and Computer Technology (CTC).  In June of that year, classes for the two courses started with fifty (50) OMC and twenty-six (26) CTC students.

MSC at that time was occupying the second floor of the Jesusa building (on the first floor was Monte de Piedad Savings Bank) along A. Flores St.  Its two classrooms had a capacity of  50 students only.  MSC had to set morning and afternoon sessions to accommodate the new two-year course students totaling more than 70.  Schedule for the short term course students were also set strategically so that there will be a classroom for each class.   Saturday and evening classes were conducted.

The short-term courses FCO (Fundamentals of Computer Operation) and FCP (Fundamentals of Computer Programming) became important subjects for the two-year courses.  Students studied DOS, Wordstar, Lotus and Dbase – software which a teen today may never have heard of, much more know how to use.  Computer screens were black and white and if you are not so lucky, “green”.

A requirement for these subjects was a set of diskettes – those thin, square plastic sheets containing a circular disk inside.  The 3.5-inch diskettes were rare then, the 5.25-inch floppies were the “in” thing.    Computers in the lab had no hard disk drives (only the office PC had disk drives) and the diskettes contain the software and the data.  PC users today will laugh at the thought that those floppy disks can contain a maximum of only 340kb!

Windows was unheard of and the Internet had not yet arrived in this part of the globe, but yes there were computer games, among them – Pacman, Block out, Space Invaders, Sokoban, etc.

MSC Origins Part III : Start of Classes at A. Flores St.

Our transfer to A. Flores St. was very timely because of our rapidly growing enrollment. In our first month alone, 43 students enrolled. Another 80 enlisted in the first 5 months of 1990. Most of them took up the FCO course. A few FCO finishers continued their computer education by taking up the Advanced Computer Operations (ACO) course.

Our students are varied. We had professionals like Atty. Hizon Arago and Fr. Raul Magmanlac. During the summer break of 1990, even elementary and high school students took up our courses. Many of them were siblings: Emmanuel, Angelica and Veronica Prudente; Celeste Remedios, Antonio Jr. and Antonio III Celestino, Jeanne Patricia, Eugene Jonathan, Ann Cristina and Carolyn Alonzo; Katherine and Josefina Javaluyas; Derrick Josue and Anna Larissa Goze; and Bernard and Juris Tiu.

We also started offering computer classes in other schools. We provided the computers and the instructors for the first computer classes held in Saint Joseph School, CC Technical Institute and San Antonio de Padua in Pila,  Laguna.

From June to the end of 1990, we had 232 more enrollees, many of them professionals, teachers and government employees. Notable among them are lawyers Lourdes Casco, now MTC Judge in Tayabas City and former San Pablo City Councilor Regina De La Cruz(+), businessmen Rudy Verzonilla and Fred Lim, government employees Ruben Taningco, NeliaAverion, Josefina Andal, Steve Manalo, Orlando Decano, and CARD leaders Annie Alip and Lorenz de Torres. Also among them are Arnel Ticzon, now second term San Pablo City Councilor and Domingo Raymundo, now a two term National Vice President of APEX.

Our software department, had as of the middle of 1990, developed the inventory software for JRS Motors and the personnel file system for Franklin Baker Company.

A school with 4 LIBRARIES (only @ MSC)

Yes you read it right, MSC has four libraries!
The main library contains general information and reference books for high school and tech-voc courses. Several Internet-enabled computers are also in the library for research and email.
A “science library corner” which contains Science and Robotics books is found in the science lab. while a similar “computer science library” which contains reference boks on programming, hardware servicing, and miscellaneous software is located at the computer lab.

The newest is a 40 sq. m. “Silid Booklatan”, a joint project of Booklat Isip Inc., Kiwanis Club-Buklod San Pablo, United Architects of the Phils. – UP Diliman Chapter, and MSC. Located near the main entrance of the school, its holdings range from nursery and children’s books, mystery and action novels, magazines, and hi-tech trade books.
Silid Booklatan aims to develop the habit of reading among community members, especially the youth that is why it is open to the public. So if you happen to pass by MSC, do not hesitate to come and read some books at Silid Booklatan.
