Stories from the Alumni: Jomaica Luya

Five years.  It’s been five years since I graduated from MSC. I still remember our rooms at the Artemio Fule Building. The narrow hallways, the transformer classrooms in the ground floor, the two rooms upstairs along with the principal’s office, the so called shop at the back, the library, the faculty, the garage, the secret comfort rooms and passages. It was quite tight. But we all fit in. It felt like home.

I had an awesome batch. We were around 40 plus but it never felt like we were. Most of the time, we were united.  We were a mix of everything, a total chaos that I enjoyed the most. Sometimes we fought for some silly things like, who did not give his share in the class fund, who did not participate in the group, who stole this or that, who’s such a teacher’s pet and who would forget the conspiracies we had during quizzes, recitations and exams? How about the twin’s amusing battles or the love triangle issues, or the falling-stairs incidents, or the undying gossips, or the poops? It sounded childish and lame, but it all brought us happiness, a bunch full of good memories to keep.  We have always been a family, more than a class.

My teachers were my friends too. They were what they teach. I saw it in the way they talked, the way they dressed and the way they approached students. The English teachers, Ma’am Andes, Sir Michael (Polinag), Ma’am Tess (Millares) and Ma’am Grace (Suarez); when they spoke, there was no doubt they were teaching English. The Mathematicians, Sir Levi, Ma’am Duma and Sir Ado;  were tricky, hard to read.

I just remember the story of the ticking heart of Sir Ado, we spent seconds of silence just to make sure it’s true. The Chemist, Teacher Nix; She trained us well. I almost memorized the periodic table because of her. She loved giving stars and giving exciting per station quizzes which I never expected to be that fun. The TLE teacher, Ma’am Alivio; the way she dressed with complete accessories;  accessories I didn’t usually see in the market because she made them herself, no one could tell she taught technology and livelihood education. The History teacher, Sir Dionglay; I salute this man. He knew what he was teaching. He was like Kuya Kim with his Boy Scout look with a cap. He was also bald, so sometimes he came to class with a wig; a wig like the hair of Goldilocks. The PE Master, Ma’am Tamayo; I bet she invented the Zumba exercise. Her shape reflected how long she had been teaching PE and how effective it was. Since she was old, she had this unlikely principle: Coke was better than any drink and it was her vitamins.

To wrap it all, I wanna say that my first year in this school was made by a choice, the next three years came out of my will. I’ve always been thankful for choosing MSC because it was not just about the school, the facilities, or the syllabus. What they have taught me is something I never thought I had in me. They did bring out the best in me and it felt so good to become the best version of myself.

Stories from the Alumni: Joan Miranda

I was asked to write about our batch in high school and talk about what made us unique, but I won’t.

To be honest, aside from our names and faces, we are just the same as you are. We are made up of different kind of students, the nerds, the athletes, the popular ones, the shy ones, and even one who seemed like God had showered him with everything.

What we went through was basically just the same things you thought you could never survive, such as exams, extra-curricular, and many more — we did and so will you.

It sounds a bit cliché but high school had indeed been a roller coaster ride for me. I fell in love, got my heart broken, fought with friends, made up with them, failed a test, aced one, and so many more memories that made me felt that I was on top of the world and even on the edge of it.

For years, I’ve been wanting a reset, to undo the things I regret and make things right. It wasn’t until many years later that I realized that everything I am now is a product of those four years of my life, and I wouldn’t want to change a thing.

Enjoy high school, every single day of it. In college, everything will not be the same. If you go to a university, the only people you would probably talk to is your seat mate. You won’t get as much interaction with your teacher. When you graduate and start working ,you would find yourself alone and longing for social interaction, and that’s when you’ll find yourself wishing you kept in touch with your friends from high school, so it wouldn’t be awkward to just randomly ask one of them out for coffee.

I’ve lost contact with some of my closest friends and now, they are strangers to me. I no longer know anything about their life, except for what they post on Facebook. Part of the reason that we drifted apart was I fell too much in love with my high school sweetheart that anything that reminded me of him then hurt me so much, I got rid of every high school memory I had, even if that meant losing friends of mine. It seems a bit silly now but after all is said and done.

My advice to you is to keep the people with you closest to your heart. Move on from high school but not from your friends. Fall in love but keep yourself and your world intact.  Cherish every mistake and triumph, and share them with people you care about the most.

Soon it’ll be your turn to share some of your high school memories, and what you’ve learned, so go ahead and enjoy the ride. Let me know how things play out.

MSC Origins Part XI: Stories at the Annex

When MSC initially rented the old Agrix supermarket building, also known as MSC Annex, it had two classrooms and an office on the second floor; a computer lab, and two classrooms, and a small office on the first floor. The building was actually the front part of the Bunquin family compound. By June 1996, this building was used by the first three classes (1st to 3rd year) of the MSC High School.

MSC 17 – Base Multiplication: Multiplying “Teen” Numbers and Others

Most of us have learned by heart the multiplication table up to 10 x 10. A simple technique will enable us to extend our multiplication power up to 20 x 20.

For example: Compute 14 x 12

Cover one of the ten’s digit and add what remains to the other number: 14 + 2 or 4 + 12 will both give 16. This will be the first or left hand part of the product.

MSC Alumnus Erwin Ciar Makes it to PinaSikat Grand Finals

He won in the daily and weekly rounds of the contest which highlights different talents of Pinoys.  His performance dubbed “D Kings” features himself as a two-faced (“doble-kara”) man – Fernando Poe Jr (FPJ), “The King” on one side and Romy Diaz, the “Contrabida King” on the other.

Erwin had the audience laughing throughout his impersonation of the two kings.  He even elicited a standing ovation from two judges, Maxene Magalona and Jong Hilario.

When he was at MSC, he was president of the Student Council.  He worked as Dance Insructor in San Pablo City and was General Manager of a resto park in Laguna.  These days he accepts hosting jobs and offers variety show packages.

Being a finalist at PinaSIkat, he already won thirty thousand pesos and he has a chance to win the grand prize of one million pesos in the finals in December.

Best of luck, Erwin!  Balato naman dyan…Nyahhhhhh….

MSC was my Guardian

In 1993, I went to Tiaong, Quezon and I worked for the former chief of Police in Tiaong, Quezon.

His name is Martin Magnayon. They were a supplier of hogs in the local market.

They used me as the caretaker of hogs from birth to fattener. I was taking care of 13 mother pigs and it usually delivered more than 10 piglets 3 times a year.

Our agreement, aside from monthly salary, they would give me a commission of one piglet if the mother pig delivered more than 10 piglets.

In 1994, I decided to go to college since I was already a high school graduate from General Santos City before I came to Tiaong.

First semester in SY 1994-1995, I enrolled at LC and I felt happy because I can pursue my college education and ready to be a professional someday.

But no! The tuition fees almost stopped me. It was  high for me, so I could not afford to continue my studies.  Before the second semester started in the same school year, I tried to search for other good schools in San Pablo City.

I found the same course in AMA and STI. But the tuition fees were almost the same.

Finally I found one of the small advertisements of MSC,   located at M. Paulino St., San Pablo City. I went there and I inquired. They offered me the scholarship examination for the same course.

I was one of the lucky students because I got a 10% discount.  I continued studying in MSC, San Pablo City while working in Tiaong as helper.

Still I had money  problem during this semester.  I didn’t have enough money to support my ambition. I just finished the second semester and then stopped.  So I went  back to continue my career, “hahaha! as hog raiser of my boss’ backyard piggery farm.

I stopped for a year and thought my ambition was no longer possible.

By school year 1996-1997, I had a little money, so I enrolled again.  MSC was located already in La Suerte building along Rizal Avenue, San Pablo City.  I has a lot of experiences and fond memories as a college student.  We formed good friendships.

I met a lot more friends than usual, since I was an irregular student. My classmates were from the afternoon shift and evening shift and sometimes from morning shift, especially in the PE subject.

School year 1997-1998 was the final year of my Computer Technology course.

In the first semester of that school year, I applied as Student Assistant to Sir Ike.  Being a student assistant helped me a lot,  since as such, my tuition fee was discounted 100%!

In this semester, Mr. Adonis Duma selected me as one of the instructors in the tie-up school. I was assigned to teach computer subjects in DEBES elementary school.

So on top of my tuition, MSC provided by my allowance.

In the second semester, I worked as a technician in MSCNet, the first Internet Provider in San Pablo City.

I graduated the Computer Technology course in March 1998.

After this course, I enrolled in a 2-year Computer Technician course, and again took advantage of the 100% discount. I learned a lot in MSC, while studying, including a lot of actual and real work.

In the late 1999, MSC brought me to Pasig City to work in the prestigious company, Software Ventures International as Computer Technician (Hardware Maintenance Group). I worked under the supervision of VYP, Jr. (Sir Toto).

Currently I am working as IT Support Engineer in Al Arrab Contracting Company, a general contractor in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

I am proud to say I am a product of MSC!

I would like to thank the MSC Teachers and Staff during my stay in my Alma mater. Thank you, Mr. Adonis Duma, my adviser. Special thanks also to Mr. VYP, my mentor who stood as my adopted father during my MSC days.
