Stories from the Alumni: Joan Miranda

I was asked to write about our batch in high school and talk about what made us unique, but I won’t.

To be honest, aside from our names and faces, we are just the same as you are. We are made up of different kind of students, the nerds, the athletes, the popular ones, the shy ones, and even one who seemed like God had showered him with everything.

What we went through was basically just the same things you thought you could never survive, such as exams, extra-curricular, and many more — we did and so will you.

It sounds a bit cliché but high school had indeed been a roller coaster ride for me. I fell in love, got my heart broken, fought with friends, made up with them, failed a test, aced one, and so many more memories that made me felt that I was on top of the world and even on the edge of it.

For years, I’ve been wanting a reset, to undo the things I regret and make things right. It wasn’t until many years later that I realized that everything I am now is a product of those four years of my life, and I wouldn’t want to change a thing.

Enjoy high school, every single day of it. In college, everything will not be the same. If you go to a university, the only people you would probably talk to is your seat mate. You won’t get as much interaction with your teacher. When you graduate and start working ,you would find yourself alone and longing for social interaction, and that’s when you’ll find yourself wishing you kept in touch with your friends from high school, so it wouldn’t be awkward to just randomly ask one of them out for coffee.

I’ve lost contact with some of my closest friends and now, they are strangers to me. I no longer know anything about their life, except for what they post on Facebook. Part of the reason that we drifted apart was I fell too much in love with my high school sweetheart that anything that reminded me of him then hurt me so much, I got rid of every high school memory I had, even if that meant losing friends of mine. It seems a bit silly now but after all is said and done.

My advice to you is to keep the people with you closest to your heart. Move on from high school but not from your friends. Fall in love but keep yourself and your world intact.  Cherish every mistake and triumph, and share them with people you care about the most.

Soon it’ll be your turn to share some of your high school memories, and what you’ve learned, so go ahead and enjoy the ride. Let me know how things play out.

MSC Origins part X: MSC HS Opens at MSC Annex

In 1995, MSC was occupying the 4th floor floor of the La Suerte building along Rizal Avenue, MSC main and the former Agrix Supermarket along A. Fule St. fondly called MSC annex.

Before the end of school year 1995-1996,  a local event caused the displacement of numerous students, and they  frantically looked for high schools to enroll in.

The city mayor quickly responded with the establishment of public high schools, known then as the city high annexes to accommodate the students who suddenly had no school to go to.  However, the government  could not provide for ALL transfer students.  Parents were looking for private schools to relocate their children.  MSC stepped up by quickly accomplishing all requirements and applying for a high school permit.

Fortunately, everything went smoothly and the permit was granted in time for the opening of school year 1996-97.  MSC annex became MSC High School, with 63 students enrolled from first to third year on its first year of operation.

Classes for the high school were only until 3 or 4 pm, so the classrooms were used by techical-vocational students until 8pm.

MSC Origins Part VIII: Transfer to La Suerte building

In June, 1995, MSC made another business decision and it packed all its belongings for the third time and left the Alvero compound along M. Paulino St., its home for four years.

MSC transferred to the La Suerte building located along the bustling Rizal Avenue.   Situated on the fourth floor, the main site of MSC (called MSC Main, for obvious reasons) seemed unreachable:

  • It was located in the space once occupied by the Regional Office of SSS, a piece of real estate that has set precedent for the upsurge of real estate prices in San Pablo. Look up and MSC  retained the balcony and the visually quiant flagpole.
  • The building does not have an elevator. This was almost a show stopper.  Use the stairs four floors up once and to test your aerobic fitness. But this was not a deterrent for the lady students and teachers who used the stairs in their two-inch heels, nor for the numerous inquirers who go up just to well, inquire.

MSC main housed the school administration office along with its records, files and paperwork. Students frequently came up to the counter to ask for the schedules, request for forms, look for teachers, or complain about their clearances, or their inability to get them. Main was the heart of MSC.

There were three classrooms in the Main, and The Laboratory.  The Lab was where the students did their case studies “hands-on” the computers. Certainly, the laboratory room here was bigger than the Alvero venue. It was common knowledge that the laboratory distinguished MSC from other computer schools.  Here students enjoyed long hours enjoying computer work alongside an army of competent laboratory assistants. There was ample room for students to do their respective work in peace  without violating each other’s personal space.

Lack of references was never a problem.  MSC’s two libraries were both located at the Main, where student will found lots of computer books, reference books and magazines. There was a photocopy machine too, if you needed to copy information. Often photocopies were  more affordable than new books.

Four floors up, the view was fantastic because it was located in the part of the city that was as metropolitan as San Pablo can get.
